FAQ

The short version: real music, built for focus. Here's everything else.

The basics

What is focus.music?

focus.music is real music engineered to help you concentrate. Tell it what you're working on, start a session, and it plays music designed to help you settle in and stay there - for deep work, creative work, or everyday tasks.

How is it different from Spotify or a lo-fi playlist?

Playlists are made for listening. focus.music is built for working. It's organized around focus sessions instead of songs, and the experience adapts to your work in real time - so you're not digging for the right playlist every time you sit down.

Do I need to sign up to try it?

No. You can start a session and listen straight away - no account, no card. Sign up only when you're ready for unlimited sessions.

What is a focus session?

A session is a block of focused work with music tuned to it. Set a timer (25, 50, or custom) or go free-flow, name the task if you like, and the music supports you until you're done.

The music

Is the music AI-generated?

No. Every track is composed and performed by working musicians, engineered specifically for sustained attention. No generated noise - ever.

Does the music have vocals? Won't singing distract me?

It's all instrumental - by design. Research shows we're wired to pay attention to the human voice, which is exactly what you don't want while you're trying to work, so there are no vocals on any channel. The one exception that proves the rule is Haiku Robot, an experimental channel that layers 20 years of EDM influences under a Japanese poet reading 16th-century haiku.

What is the "Adaptive Runtime"?

It's the intelligence around the music. The more you use focus.music, the more it learns - the channels that hold your attention, the times of day you focus best - and tunes future sessions to you.

Trial & pricing

How much does it cost?

$4.99/month, or $39.99/year (that's $3.33/month - save 33%). Both plans unlock everything.

How does the free trial work?

Every subscription starts with a 7-day free trial. There's no charge during the trial, and you can cancel in two clicks before it ends.

Will I be charged during the trial?

No. You're only billed if you don't cancel before the 7 days are up, and we make that date clear up front.

How do I cancel?

In two clicks, from your account settings. No emails, no hoops. Always fair, no gimmicks.

What payment methods can I use?

Card, PayPal, and express wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

How does billing work in the app?

Subscriptions started in the app are billed and managed through your app store account, and plan details are shown on the plan screen before you start.

Devices & access

What devices does it work on?

Web, iOS, and Android - one account, every device. Your sessions and preferences follow you.

Do I need headphones?

No, but they help - especially in a noisy space.

The science

Does it actually work? What's it based on?

focus.music is built on 16 years of research into music, attention, and cognitive performance, plus in-house behavioral data from 640,000 people across millions of work sessions. It's a foundation no one else has.

Who's behind it?

focus.music was founded by Will Henshall - a platinum-selling songwriter and award-winning inventor - and grew out of Focus@Will, the long-running research project behind those 16 years of data.

Privacy

What do you do with my data?

Your data is encrypted and never sold. We use your listening preferences and focus patterns to personalize your experience - and you can export or delete your data anytime.
